MIchigan Requirements

Michigan has special licensing requirements that Crashed Toys and Salvage Direct buyers must satisfy.

Most of our buyers can purchase the majority of vehicles in auction as long as they have a dealer, dismantler, salvage, junk, scrapper, rebuilder or related license.

Section 248 of the Michigan Vehicle Code (MCL 257.248) provides that any person, partnership, or corporation engaging in business as any type of vehicle dealer in Michigan must be licensed by the Michigan Department of State. The Bureau of Regulatory Services oversees this licensing activity. Other auto-related businesses, such as motor vehicle repair facilities and automotive mechanics, are also licensed by the Department of State.

Michigan requires you purchase a specific license to purchase certain titles and/or have access to the salvage pools in the state.

http://www.sos.state.mi.us/bar/dealer/index.html Salvage Vehicle Agent may buy salvage or scrap titled vehicles at an auction. Class C and Class R dealers will also need to have the Salvage Vehicle Agent license.
  • How much does it cost to get a dealer license?

The license fee for Class C and Class R dealers is $100. All other licenses cost $10. Other fees include a $39 processing fee for fingerprints, and the cost of dealer plates.

  • What type of dealer license do I need?

The type of license you need depends on the type of business you intend to operate.

If you want to buy and sell used vehicles, you need a Class B Used Vehicle Dealer License. The Class B license allows you to buy vehicles from any source - including auctions - and to wholesale and/or retail vehicles that you own - including exports to foreign countries.

If you want to buy vehicles to dismantle them for parts, you need a Class C Used Vehicle Parts Dealer License or a Class R Automotive Recycler License. Businesses that rebuild salvage titled vehicles need both the Class B and Class C or R licenses.

Additionally, only a Salvage Vehicle Agent may buy salvage or scrap titled vehicles at an auction. Class C and Class R dealers will also need to have the Salvage Vehicle Agent license.
